A quick dive into the game that never gets old
If you grew up in the Philippines, chances are you already know Tongits. It is one of those games that is woven into everyday Filipino life – played during fiestas, family reunions, lazy weekends, and yes, even during brownout nights with nothing but candles and a worn-out deck of cards.
Tongits is a three-player card game derived from Mahjong and Rummy influences, and it uses a standard 52-card deck. The goal is simple: be the first to dump all your cards by forming valid sets and sequences, or hold the lowest-value hand when the game ends. What makes it addicting is the constant decision-making – do you draw from the pile, do you call the game, do you fold? Every move matters.
At max7jili, we have taken everything that makes the traditional Tongits great and brought it online with smooth gameplay, fair dealing, and the chance to win real pera. Whether you are a seasoned player or just learning the ropes, max7jili has a table for you.
From the highlands of Tagaytay to the heart of the city – Tongits on max7jili connects players across the Philippines.
New to the game? Hindi problema. Here is everything you need to get started.
Tongits is played by exactly 3 players. The dealer distributes 12 cards each to two players and 13 cards to the dealer themselves. The remaining cards form the draw pile in the center.
A meld is a valid combination of cards – either a set (three or four cards of the same rank) or a sequence (three or more consecutive cards of the same suit). Build melds in your hand to reduce your dead wood count.
On your turn, draw a card from either the central pile or pick up the top discard. Then discard one card from your hand to the discard pile. You can also lay down melds or add to existing ones on the table.
If you manage to play or discard all your cards, you call "Tongits!" and win the round outright. This is the most direct path to victory and usually the biggest payout.
Any player (other than the one who discarded last) can challenge by calling "Fight!" All players reveal their hands, and the player with the lowest unmelded card value wins. Timing this challenge is everything.
If the draw pile runs out before anyone wins, all players reveal their hands. The player with the least remaining card points takes the round. Dead wood matters a lot in these situations.
Know what each card is worth so you can keep your dead wood score low.
| Card | Point Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Ace (A) | 1 point | Lowest value – sulit to keep |
| 2 – 9 | Face value | E.g., 7 of Hearts = 7 pts |
| 10 | 10 points | Start forming sequences early |
| Jack (J) | 10 points | Face cards are high risk |
| Queen (Q) | 10 points | Discard quickly if not useful |
| King (K) | 10 points | Best to meld early |

These tips won't guarantee a jackpot every time, pero they'll keep you in the game longer.
Pay attention to what others are throwing away. If you see two Queens already discarded, holding your third Queen is safe. Awareness is your best weapon.
Always aim to reduce your unmelded card points. Even if you can't call Tongits, a low dead wood score wins you the Fight phase. Don't sit on high-value cards.
Don't rush a Fight challenge. Wait until you're confident your hand is the lowest. Calling too early when another player is almost at zero is a quick way to lose your buy-in.
Don't lock yourself into one meld plan. If your intended sequence isn't coming, pivot. Staying flexible on which melds you're chasing keeps your options open and your hand moving.

Ask any Filipino adult about their earliest card game memory and there is a good chance Tongits will come up. It is one of those games that transcends class, region, and generation. You find it in barangay corners, in offices during lunch break, in the probinsya during fiestas, and now – at max7jili – in the palm of your hand.
Unlike Poker, which has a strong American cultural identity, or Baccarat, which feels more at home in glitzy casinos, Tongits feels authentically ours. The game itself is believed to have emerged in the northern Philippines and spread through the country largely through informal play. There are no official governing bodies, no international tournaments, and no canonical rulebook – just community knowledge passed from player to player. That informality is actually part of its charm.
At max7jili, we respect that heritage. Our Tongits tables follow the most widely accepted Filipino ruleset, so whether you're from Ilocos, Cebu, Davao, or Metro Manila, the game will feel familiar. We didn't invent some casino-ified version with confusing side bets. We just brought the hometown classic online and made sure it works properly.
What separates good Tongits players from great ones isn't just card knowledge – it's reading people. Even in an online setting at max7jili, timing tells you a lot. Is the player to your left taking longer to discard? Are they consistently picking from the pile rather than the discards? These behavioral cues exist even in digital gameplay through timing patterns and discard choices.
The Fight call is where this psychology really comes alive. Calling a Fight when another player is close to going Tongits yourself is a risky but sometimes brilliant play. You might catch them mid-build with a mess of high-card dead wood, or you might expose yourself and hand them the round. There's genuine tension in that decision – and that tension is exactly why Filipinos keep coming back to this game.
Even experienced players fall into habits that cost them rounds. Here are a few common ones to watch out for when playing at max7jili:
One of the most common questions from new players is whether real-money Tongits online is worth it. Honestly? It adds a whole different layer to the game. When there's actual pera on the line – even just ₱50 or ₱100 – every decision carries more weight. You think twice before discarding, you pay closer attention to other players' moves, and you feel the genuine rush when you lay down that final meld and call Tongits.
max7jili keeps the stakes accessible. You don't need to be a high roller. Our entry-level tables start at ₱50, which is about the cost of a merienda. From there, tables scale up for players who want a more competitive experience. And with regular promotions and cashback events, your playing budget can stretch further than you'd expect.
We love Tongits, but at max7jili we also care about our players. Card games are meant to be fun – a source of excitement and a way to connect with others, not a source of stress or financial pressure. Set a budget before you play, take breaks between sessions, and never chase losses. If you ever feel like gaming is affecting your daily life, our Responsible Gaming page has resources and tools to help you stay in control.
Play smart, play fun, and may your melds always come together. Laro na at max7jili – and may the best hand win!
